Tom Brettell

Thomas A. Brettell recently retired from Cedar Crest College (Allentown, PA) as Professor Emeritus. He taught analytical and forensic chemistry courses at Cedar Crest for 17 years. He previously served for 31 years in the New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences, where, as Director, he oversaw the operation of the State's regional forensic laboratory system. He is a subject matter expert in seized drug analysis and forensic toxicology including breath and blood alcohol analysis and was responsible for the development and implementation of New Jersey’s breath alcohol program, testifying three times in Frye hearings in front of the NJ State Supreme Court. Tom is a past Chair of the Criminalistics Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, a Diplomate of the American Board of Criminalistics, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Tom is a life member of the CFDV and has served as CFDV past president, secretary, treasurer, program chair and has chaired and organized many GC short courses for the forum. He was awarded the CFDV award in 1997. He has served on the Organization of Scientific Committees (OSAC) and is  presently serving as Academician Commissioner on the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission. Tom is also a long-standing member of the governing board of the Eastern Analytical Symposium, serving as EAS president in 2019.  

Dr. Brettell earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Villanova University, his M.S. in chemistry from Lehigh University and his B.A. in chemistry from Drew University.
