Technical Planning Chemist

Reports To:   Technical Planning and Forecast Group Leader and Director of Chemistry

 

Summary:  Design syntheses for future work and related functions by performing the following duties.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Research and Preparation of Proposals for Chemistry

  1. Prepares customer proposals using computer software (Microsoft, ChemDraw, etc.)

  2. Design synthetic routes using literature precedence from scientific routes utilizing journals and online chemistry software (Scifinder, Reaxys and publically-accessible databases)

  3. Source materials using Reaxys and eMolecules software

  4. Calculate raw material costs using sourced materials in the proposed synthetic plan

  5. Track raw material orders for large and designated projects

  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

General Support for Director of Chemistry

  1. Submit materials for sourcing and ordering to procurement

  2. Assist in preparing the first weekly reports for new projects

  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

A minimum of M.S. in Organic Chemistry required.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

 

Skills:

Language Ability:

Ability to critically read, analyze, and interpret scientific information from diverse sources (periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, patents or government documents). Write scientifically rigorous reports and synthesis procedures in order to enable other researchers. Effective presentation of information and respond to questions from managers, co-workers and external collaborators

 

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpretation of technical information from disparate information sources, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Proficient knowledge in selection of reagents and attendant reaction mechanisms, with prioritization of appropriate reaction conditions, in order to maximize probability of success.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, ChemDraw, Reaxys, and Scifinder.
